Laser Chips For Light Speed Communications

From decades engineers have tried to accelerate the pace of conventional, electricity-based computer chips by melding them with laser-based signal processors.

Researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), have designed a silicon-based laser that emits ultrashort pulses of light at high frequencies--two characteristics that are crucial if silicon-based lasers are to become practical. Eventually, the researchers hope that the new laser could replace other, more expensive lasers in optical communication networks. It could even lead to faster computers that shuttle data around using light instead of electricity.

Modern telecommunications networks use three distinct gadgets--lasers, modulators, and detectors--to produce, encode, and detect light. Currently, all three are made of nonsilicon semiconductors, such as Indium Phosphide, that are difficult to mass-produce; as a consequence, they tend to be expensive and bulky. But if they could instead be made from silicon, they could be integrated on individual chips, says John Bowers, professor of electrical and computer engineering at UCSB. Devices that currently cost hundreds of dollars each could then be made in bulk for pennies, and the cost of bandwidth would plummet. The one snag in the plan is that it's hard to make silicon produce light.

To turn the laser on, the researchers applied electrical current to metal contacts on top of the indium Phosphide. Indium Phosphide is a naturally light-emitting material, so the strips of it on top of the wafer produced photons that got trapped in the channel below, bouncing back and forth along the length of the silicon waveguide. In certain materials, that bouncing is enough to amplify normal light into laser light, but not in silicon.

The corporate and university teams set out to develop a hybrid design that could handle both electricity and light. They bonded a thin layer of Indium Phosphide, a compound that acts as a medium for the Laser, onto Silicon sheets by exposing both materials to a blast of hot, electrically charged oxygen atoms, the Indium Phosphide was spiked with Aluminum Gallium Indium Arsenide to give it added speed. A microlayer of oxides then formed on the surface, gluing them together. “ We can make thousands of Laser with just one bond, as opposed to bonding each Laser individually,” says John Bowers of University of California, Santa Barbara.

Here I am giving you few methods of saving Atmosphere, Energy, Water, Environment, here we have to come together to save our Earth.

We have to work hard to save our Earth, and this can’t be done by a single person. To save environment and our Planet Earth we all have to come together and we should start working on individual levels.

We should come together and start our work in different Countries, in different States, in different Cities, in different Villages, and last but not least in our Homes.

We all have to work on individual level, we should start this from our homes.

Than and than only we will be able to save our Planet Earth, Atmosphere, Environment, Energy, and Atmosphere.

Soooo we will have to go Green. Start to beat Global Warming right from your Home.

1) Avoid unnecessary wastage of electricity in our own houses. Only required Tube Lights/Bulbs and the Electric equipments should glow in required rooms.

2) Unnecessary movements/rooming on bike or car should be avoided. It will save fuel and also controls pollution.

3) Go to near places by walk or by cycling, as this will save fuel and will maintain your health.

4) Plants or trees should be planted by every persons around its own house or in any open space, and should maintain plant or tree by watering and cleaning it till grows fully.

5) Motivate to other persons for plantation in the surrounding areas.

6) Plastics carry bags should be avoided to carry the goods or materials in our daily use. As it is nearly impossible to dispose by any methods.

7) Our daily wastages should be properly disposed, and try to recycle the materials.

8) Repair all taps into the home and company, to avoid water leaking and dropping continuously; as it waste lots of waters.

So friends I am requesting all of you to save water, environment, atmosphere, energy, earth by above methods because we are warming i.e. Global Warming.

Secrets of Michael Phelps Olympic 2008

Hi Search Freaks, Today every ware is the craze of Gold Medal in 2008 Olympic Game So here i come up with the secrets of Michael Phelps for winning so many Gold Medals in this 2008 Olympic Game.

It’s an Indian scientist Rajat Mittal who has been studying American swimmer Michel Phelps. IIT Kanpur alumni and George Washington University researcher Rajat Mittal has spent the past five years studying Michel Phelps and his dolphins kick, also known as the “Berkoff Blastoff” after the Harvard back-stroke who used it the first time at the Olympic 20 years ago to won the 7 Gold Medals. It all began when Rajat Mitttala a professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, got involved in a US Navy projects to study the Dolphins, thought to be the ultimate swimmers. In collaboration with USA Swimmers, Rajat Mittal and his colleagues began studying the fluid dynamics with around 50 American Swimmers, eventually finding that of all of them, Michael Phelps was able to use his body “in a way that is very, very different from the other athletes and much closer to Dolphins, then they have seen for any other swimmers. Actually Michael Phelps is able to straighten his massive size 14 feet to a greater angle (its about 15degree) than any other swimmers, to reduce resistance. Almost 90% of the thrust is getting used for swimming which is coming from the foot. And the flatter and bigger your foot is, you essentially have a bigger paddle , Michaels foot size and the angle he generates with it plays a big role in is ability to swim very well.

Mehandi (Henna) Designs Patterns

Hi My Freak Friends…..

Yesterday Night .. My spouse, told me to put Mehandi on her hands.This sudden decision come into her mind because of this Shravan Month (An Indian Hindi Month). In this month Indian ladies or girls use to put Mehandi on their hands or feet.

In Indian culture married women, ladies puts Mehandi in this Shravan month is the Sign of Love for their husbands and also for the long life of their husbands…. generally widows do not puts Mehandi in the month of Shravan.Unmarried women or girls use to put Mehandi on their hands or feet in the month of Bhadrapad (An Indian Hindi Calendar Month after Shravan)… for the Love of their brothers or for the good wishes for their brothers.

So I said ok and started to put Mehandi on her hand (Palm)..It took about 1.5Hrs to complete a Mehandi design on her hand and feet. So I would like to share some information about Mehandi as follows :

* Mehandi is knowh as Henna in Urdu language…

* Mehandi is the name of a tree…

* Crushing the leaves of Mehandi tree…and putting it on the hands(palm) for about ½-1Hrs results a permanent mark on palm in Red colour..

* Henna (Mehandi) grows in hot climates and can be found in most Middle Eastern countries such as Iran, Pakistan, Syria, Persia, Morocco, Egypt and India. The natural dyeing properties found in henna are Tannins. There is some historical evidence that Mehandi as a ceremonial art form was in ancient India. Indian henna has been found to be the best for Mehandi, particularly Indians doing Mehandi use fine, thin lines for lacy, floral and paisley patterns covering entire hands, forearms, feet, and shins. African Mehandi patterns are bold, large geometric designs, usually black.

Why to put Mehandi ?

Unlike permanent tattoos, a lifetime commitment to your Mehandi design is not required as the designs automatically fade over time. Generally in 1 to 4 weeks, but it will depend on the which of your body the Mehandi design is, and how long the paste was left to set. The less exposed to soap, water and rubbing, the longer your design will last.

This is my last post about the brief explanations of the terms used in the world of Virus, Antivirus & Hacking, which I was posting from last few days. Here are fews...

What is Computer Worm :

A Worm is similar to a virus by its design, and is considered to be a sub-class of a virus. Worms spread from computer to computer, but unlike a virus, it has the capability to travel without any help from a person. A worm takes advantage of file or information transport features on your system, which allows it to travel unaided. The biggest danger with a worm is its capability to replicate itself on your system, so rather than your computer sending out a single worm, it could send out hundreds or thousands of copies of itself, creating a huge devastating effect. One example would be for a worm to send a copy of itself to everyone listed in your e-mail address book. Then, the worm replicates and sends itself out to everyone listed in each of the receiver's address book, and the manifest continues on down the line. Due to the copying nature of a worm and its capability to travel across networks the end result in most cases is that the worm consumes too much system memory (or network bandwidth), causing Web servers, network servers and individual computers to stop responding. In more recent worm attacks such as the much-talked-about .Blaster Worm., the worm has been designed to tunnel into your system and allow malicious users to control your computer remotely.

What is Computer Spyware :

Spyware is software installed on a computer that is designed to collect information about the computer user, often without their knowledge or consent. This can result in so called identity theft, or theft of valuable information (e.g. bank or credit card details) or proprietary business data. Spyware is often developed by organized crime rings rather than lone individuals and may be installed by a virus.

What is Computer Rootkits :

Rootkits are programs that install on your computer while keeping themselves and their activities hidden to remain invisible to theuse. They represent a significant security risk on both home computers and company networks and are notoriously difficult to find and remove. Rootkits themselves are normally installed by a virus or other type of malware infection and it is therefore highly recommended that computer users have up to date antvirus / anti-spyware software installed and running on their computer

What is Computer Antivirus, Trojan Horses

Hi Freak Friends, Here are again few defenitions of the terms involved in Virus, Antivirus, and Hacking. So have a look. What is Computer Antivirus : A utility or you can say a computer software (Program) that searches your hard disk for viruses and removes any that are found. Most antivirus programs include an auto-update feature that enables the program to download new codes for Antivirus software for the profiles of new viruses so that it can check for the new viruses as soon as they are discovered by the Antivirus software company. What is Trojan Horses : A destructive program that masquerades as a benign application. Unlike viruses, Trojan horses do not replicate themselves but they can be just as destructive. One of the most insidious types of Trojan horse is a program that claims to rid your Computer of viruses but instead introduces viruses onto your computer. Trojans usually consist of two parts, a Client and a Server. The server is run on the victim's machine and listens for connections from a Client used by the attacker. When the server is run on a machine it will listen on a specific port or multiple ports for connections from a Client. In order for an attacker to connect to the server they must have the IP Address of the computer where the server is being run. Some trojans have the IP Address of the computer they are running on sent to the attacker via email or another form of communication. Once a connection is made to the server, the client can then send commands to the server; the server will then execute these commands on the victim's machine. If any body or by any mean if your computer get infected by the Trojan than your computer can be commanded by somebody else. The person at the other end of the Trojan will be able to handle your computer without your permission. The term comes from the a Greek story of the Trojan War, in which the Greeks give a giant wooden horse to their foes, the Trojans, ostensibly as a peace offering. But after the Trojans drag the horse inside their city walls, Greek soldiers sneak out of the horse's hollow belly and open the city gates, allowing their compatriots to pour in and capture Troy. Trojan horses are broken down in classification based on how they breach syatems and the damage they cause. The seven main types of Trojan horses are: 1) Remote Access Trojans 2) Data Sending Trojans 3) Destructive Trojans 4) Proxy Trojans 5) FTP Trojans 6) Security software disabler Trojans 7) Denial-of-service attack (DoS) Trojans A Trojan Horse is full of as much trickery as the mythological Trojan Horse it was named after. The Trojan Horse, at first glance will appear to be useful software but will actually do damage once installed or run on your computer. Those on the receiving end of a Trojan Horse are usually tricked into opening them because they appear to be receiving legitimate software or files from a legitimate source. When a Trojan is activated on your computer, the results can vary. Some Trojans are designed to be more annoying than malicious (like changing your desktop, adding silly active desktop icons) or they can cause serious damage by deleting files and destroying information on your system. Trojans are also known to create a backdoor on your computer that gives malicious users access to your system, possibly allowing confidential or personal information to be compromised. Unlike viruses and worms, Trojans do not reproduce by infecting other files nor do they self-replicate. A low-cost laptop being developed by the Indian government, which is going to cost US$100 when available, and not $10 as was earlier stated by the government. A spokesman for Minister of State for Higher Education, D. Purandeswari, said on Wednesday that the price of the laptop would in fact be US$100 rather than $10. In a transcript of the speech delivered by Purandeswari at a conference in Delhi on Tuesday, the Minister was quoted as saying that the government aims to provide $10 laptops to students. The transcript has been updated subsequently to reflect the new price of the laptop. Research on the low-cost laptop is being already carried out at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras.

The government did not however provide information on the specifications of the laptop, or this bottom price is including subsidy from the government. The Indian government is planning to use information and communications technology (ICT) to strengthen its current programs for distance learning by making them accessible online, Purandeswari said. As part of this new "National Mission in Education through ICT", the government is also working on developing a very low-cost and low-power-consuming access device, according to Purandeswari. The government also plans to make available free bandwidth for education purposes to every Indian. It plans to use this bandwidth to build a "knowledge network" between and within institutions of higher learning in the country. India's Internet penetration is currently very low. The country had 4.38 million broadband subscribers at the end of June for a population of over 1.13 billion. A number of local and multinational companies like Microsoft and Intel, and NGOs (nongovernmental organizations) have been working on technology for education. Reliance Communacation is playing main Hero roll here. Reliance Communication (ADAG) has been tie up with One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) foundation. Through this collaboration, Reliance Communication would now be providing Internet connectivity, network and logistics to the OLPC’s India initiative. Under this initiative Reliance Communication will provide its state-of-the-art network that would cover over 25,000 towns and 6,00,000 Indian villages by March 2008. As Mrs. Tina Ambani said “Every child has the right to education. Reliance Communication is going to facilitate that right. This is not a laptop but an educational programme which will promote e-learning in the country. India’s economy is growing at a rapid pace. We need to to impart quality education to children. The education system has to be more student-friendly. It has to be fun-filled for them.” OLPC Progamme is now running successfully in a tribal village at Khairat (near Karjat, Maharashtra) with OLPC XO laptops and teacher training for incorporating the new way of imparting education.
