Prepare your laptop and desktop before it get lost or before it may be stolen. Loss or theft of a device is increasingly likely, disruptive, and costly. Prepare your laptop to track where it goes and even you can see the picture of the thief. Stilling of laptop is a monitory loss, but what happen if their are lots of personal and important information reside into it (commercial laptop)which can ruin your life. So prepare your laptop or desktop before it may loss or theft.
A user of this tracking software (Adeona) has to install a piece of free software (Client Adeona) on the laptop after that you will get a credential key that the software will provide; you have to keep this credential key on the pen drive or you can e-mail it to yourself or simply you can write this code on a piece of paper, that's it! and start tracking your laptop, but remember you have to do this before any thing happens wrong. And here you are that much wise that you can think of tracking your spouse, friends, boss, and child using this free laptop tracking software, that I can imagine. So you must have Adeona installed into your laptop, god knows that when and what can happen, and you will miss this software. Adeona, is small in size, and it is currently available for Windows, Mac OS X & Linux but in feature it can also support iPhone & Windows Mobile phones etc. You can track your laptop if and only if it maintains Internet connectivity and unmodified software, also their is no such software or technology currently present in the market which can track your laptop without internet. Adeona is the first Open Source system for tracking the location of your lost or stolen laptop that does not rely on a proprietary, central service. You can install Adeona on your laptop free of cost and start using it, its free to use and even you can contribute into it as a developer, there's no need to rely on a single third party. Computer scientists from the University of Washington have developed the first free and opensource laptop tracking software or system. This system is the result of recent academic research started at the University of Washington, with participants now also at the University of California San Diego and the University of California Davis. The foundations of the Adeona design and an analysis of its security and privacy properties are published in a research paper at the 2008 USENIX Security Symposium. The lead Ph.D. students on the project are Gabriel Maganis and Thomas Ristenpart, working with UW faculty members Tadayoshi Kohno and Arvind Krishnamurthy. This is named as Adeona, after the Roman goddess of safe returns. You just have to install Adeona client on your laptop as it is very simple to install and it does the rest. The software runs in the background and continuously updates your current IP address as soon as it is connect to the Internet. When the stolen computer goes online, it sends a message with its own IP address on to the web and thus you can retrieve this information from any other computer by running the Adeona Recovery tool, but remember to always keep your Adeona-retrive Credentials.ost file (Its different for all users) with you (This is generated by Adeona it self while installation). Adeona is designed to use the Open Source OpenDHT distributed storage service to store location updates sent by a small software client installed on an owner's laptop. The client continually monitors the current location of the laptop, gathering information (such as IP addresses and local network topology) that can be used to identify its current location, it also operates the inbuilt camera to take pictures every half minuets of the person using the stolen device(can be used with the inbuilt camera into laptop). The client then uses strong cryptographic mechanisms to not only encrypt the location data, but also can ensure that the ciphertexts stored within OpenDHT are anonymous and unlinkable. At the same time, it is easy for an owner to retrieve location information through i.p address, and thus you can easily work with the cops to get your laptop back.
Adeona has three main properties:
* Private: Adeona uses state-of-the-art cryptographic mechanisms to ensure that the owner is the only party that can use the system to reveal the locations visited by a device.
* Reliable: Adeona uses a community-based remote storage facility, ensuring retrievability of recent location updates.
* Open source and free: Adeona's software is licensed under GPLv2. While your locations are secret, the tracking system's design is not.
Get Adeona download for your Windows OS Laptop or Linux based or for your Mac OS X laptop and start tracking your laptop. Go to the Home page of Adeona, after getting adeona installed you definitely join the Adeona user group on Google and if you are a code player (developer) than you be sure to join the Adeona Developers group to enhance this tracking software (Adeona) and to contribute towards the code. Be sure to read FAQs for the Adeona users. Now don’t worry so much if your laptop get stolen, theft or lost, start tracking.
